The price buys you a decent (toroidal!!) 100 Watt transformer, a rectifier bridge on a heatsink, and a very simple 4-light voltmeter. There is NO current control, NO voltage control and thus, ZERO intelligence on-board. It is simply a 6 or 12 volt (switch selectable) DC power supply that you connect to a battery and then carefully monitor MANUALLY to ensure that it doesn't overcharge the battery. "Protection" is simply two fuses in SERIES(!): 1x10A (underside of case) & (1x20A internal).
